Gremlins and Monsters: A Good Rehearsal

Lily, Hans and I had a really fun and productive rehearsal today, and I thought I would reflect on some of the things that worked for us. Firstly, we decided to continue exploring the idea of monsters that we came upon while working on movement last class. This exploration involved music, a pile of clothes on the floor, and us just getting creative and channelling our inner monster. What really helped us was recording this, which is something that has been mentioned a lot in class as a technique of many companies. We definitely saw the value in it, because watching our exploration afterwards allowed us to pull out the moments that worked. This also lead to individual discoveries and interpretations of our inner gremlins/monsters, which has helped us develop our piece even more. We also did a lot of 'yes and'-ing, which is always wonderful. We played with the things we are good at, specifically music, discussed how each of us views our own identity, and in the end had a clear plan of attack for our piece. We still have a lot of material to generate, but now that we know where we are going all that is left is play and creation!

Secondly, in terms of finding inspiration for this piece, we have found many different and often random sources of inspiration. I looked up the definition of 'identity', and that sent me on a bit of an inspiration tangent concerning whether we really have an identity or not. Lily said today (and she may mention this in her post, if you do then I'm sorry for stealing your story Lily) that she was inspired by a picture of a Halloween cake she saw with a gremlin coming out of it. Hans found inspiration in an awesome rap video. So there are many different stimuli coming into our piece!
